GATES, Charles Henry, 91, of Henrico, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 23, 2016. He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Gates Moss (John F.); his father, Charles H. Gates; and his loving wife of 64 years, Joyce Utz Gates. Charles is survived by his five sons, Charlie (Teresa), Steve (Brenda), Mike, John (Ann) and Eddie (Sheila); eight grandchildren, Travis, Stephanie, Chris, John Jr., David, Alan-Michael, Megan and Nicole; six great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Emily, Ayden, Colette, Gresham and Aliyah; and nieces and nephews. GATES, Charles Henry, 91, of Henrico, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 23, 2016. He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Gates Moss (John F.); his father, Charles H. Gates; and his loving wife of 64 years, Joyce Utz Gates. Charles is survived by his five sons, Charlie (Teresa), Steve (Brenda), Mike, John (Ann) and Eddie (Sheila); eight grandchildren, Travis, Stephanie, Chris, John Jr., David, Alan-Michael, Megan and Nicole; six great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Emily, Ayden, Colette, Gresham and Aliyah; and nieces and nephews. Charlie was born in Louisa, Va. on June 5, 1925, attended Miller School in Charlottesville and left school to join the Navy in 1943, where he served until May of 1946. He began his career with the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (Chessie System "CSX") in 1948 and remained there until his retirement in 1980. He spent much of his career as a train dispatcher at the Main Street Station. The family lived in Richmond and Newport News. Charles and Joyce raised their five sons in Henrico. Charlie had a flawless memory up until his final hours. He will be remembered as a dapper gentleman. He was a member of Oakwood Memorial Baptist Church. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Cindy Lewis, Linda Brickhouse and Bonnie Romig for their kind, loving and dedicated care. Also, to the staff at Manor Care Assisted Living, Rehab & Nursing Home, we thank you for many years of professional care and attention. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 29, from 3 to 7 p.m., at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, Va. 23231, where a service will be held on Wednesday, November 30, at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Oakwood Memorial Baptist Church, 3100 Gay Ave., Richmond, Va. 23231 or Miller School, 1000 Samuel Miller Loop, Charlottesville, Va. 23903.
